The 1st Feast of Festivus.


240 years ago this week, a group of farmers, businessmen, and pretty much everyday people made a bet with life and death ramifications.

They decided to take on the most powerful government in the world and told them to take a long walk off a short pier.

On July 4, 1776, a group of men from 13 different colonies celebrated the 1st Feast of Festivus and had the boldest airing of grievances ever written -- they gave King George 27 grievances that they were no longer going to tolerate.  And if that weren't bold enough, they told King George that they weren't going to serve him anymore.

Now this might not seem like as much of a big deal now but back then they were pretty much daring the most powerful army and navy on the planet to a fight.  And what did this group have on its side?

An army where most of the "soldiers" didn't even have shoes.  They wrapped fabric around their feet...in winter.  They also had enough gunpowder for each soldier to fire only 6 rounds.  They also had no navy.  On top of that, 2/3 of the local population were not on their side -- so almost 70% of the people in the Americas were likely to dime them out to the Red Coats.

Would you do that?  As much as I'd like to say I would, I probably wouldn't have the guts to do that.

But against all odds, these guys did -- and ended up beating this massive military power.

And because of this, you and I have the rights that we have today.  The right for me to write this to you without permission from a King.  Rights that no other country had ever had before.

This Independence Day, I really started thinking about how you and I have the freedom not just to exercise these rights, but also to choose the life you really want.  My question to you is simple.

Are you really living the lifestyle you want to be living?  Or are you essentially a servant of your job, slaving away just to pay your bills without much left over to truly enjoy?

I know I was.  For many years.

But it doesn't have to be that way.  You can start living the type of life you want to live, but it requires one essential ingredient to get there.

In order to get to 2nd base, you have to step off 1st base.  You have to make the proactive step to walk a different path.  If you think that this newfound life will just appear when you're doing the same things you've always done, it won't.  That truly is the definition of insanity.

For me, I spent years (and a lot of money) educating and training myself not only how to succeed on this new path, but even more basic, learning how to actually FIND this path in the first place.  That is a kicker.  A lot of people will offer to show you how to succeed on that path, but unless you know how to transition, it will never happen.

You'll get more jaded and these people will get richer.
