Do Have Be
Do you every feel like you're swimming upstream? Like no matter how hard you try to achieve a goal, it just doesn't happen.
I can totally relate. I've faced this my entire life.
Growing up, I was never the fastest, tallest, or smartest kid around. But I was always expected to succeed one way or another. So I figured out one way to get there. Brute force hard work. Practice longer, study more hours, do the dirty work no one else wanted to do.
So over the last 35 years, this has always been my bread and butter to hit a crazy difficult goal. Granted, there were things that I ended up being pretty good at so I didn't have to go that route.
This changed over the last year or so. For those who are relatively new subscribers, I went through a brutal face plant into asphalt early last year. Since then, I've worked through all the "fun" side effects that come with a brain injury. But I still set insanely crazy goals for myself.
The problem? My body doesn't always want to cash the check my mind writes. Or is it the other way around? Some days, I'm feeling great and do exactly what I want -- and some days my body decides that it's going to take a day off. So when I'm back to feeling better, I felt the need to make up for the day(s) I couldn't move the ball forward. This just made the cycle more polarized. Not good.
This week, a friend of mine reminded of something that one of my mentors told me a few years ago that helped me reset my paradigm and get back in better balance. And I'm going to share this PRICELESS lesson with you all today.
Most people, when they are pursuing a goal of theirs, they say to themselves something like the following:
Once I HAVE what I want, then...
I'll DO what I need to do, then...
I'll BE the person I want to be.
But in order to reach your goal, you have to do what turned George Constanza's life around. You have to do the opposite of what your normal instincts are. Once you make this small tweak, you'll start to see the roadblocks and obstacles in your way start to disappear.
First, you need to decide to BE the person you want to be starting today, then...
You'll be forced to DO what it takes to be that person, then...
Then you'll start to HAVE what you really want.
But why does it work this way? The concept is simple, but it's the opposite of what a lot of the modern myths will tell you. You see, when you read books like The Secret,
they'll tell you that you attract what you focus on. But that's completely false.
You attract who you really are. So when you set the goals you want, you will never get there by just dreaming and hoping. You have to become the person you want or start to tangibly live the lifestyle you want first before the results start to roll in.
So follow the advice that Jerry gave George Constanza. Do what your instincts tell you, but do it in reverse. Watch how more easily your goals come into fruition.
Talk soon,
Matt
